Kacy Mims, a resident of Randolph, pulled off a miracle victory in the American Bass Anglers Top 150 Solo Series event on the weekend of June 25-26.

The event took place on Lake Chickamauga near Dayton, Tennessee.

Mims got off to a rocky start on the first day of the tournament, finishing in 12th among the fishermen present by catching his five-bass limit, the fish weighing a total of 15.62 pounds.

The leader after the first day, Jonathan “Dale” Pelfrey of Rockwood, Tennessee, had caught 31.36 pounds worth of fish.

Going into the second day, Mims was just hoping to finish in the top-20 so that he could receive a check.

But that second morning, Mims caught fire.

“By 8:30 [a.m.], on my scales I had 28 pounds … with five fish,” Mims said.

Mims rallied from that early morning run, finishing the day with five bass that weighed a total of 29.55 pounds.

That total was good enough to send Mims to the top of the leaderboard, even past Pelfrey who brought in just 12.66 pounds worth of fish on the second day.

“I never dreamed that when I went to bed on Friday night [June 25] that I would go catch 29 pounds,” Mims said.

The victory not only provided Mims with a $14,000 check, but he also qualified for the Ray Scott Championship event.

“That’s really special to me,” Mims said. “Ray Scott is one of the founding fathers of the B.A.S.S. [Bass Anglers Sportsmen Society]”

That championship event will be held in April 2022, with the winning prize being a check for $115,000.
