A Chilton County native has stepped up to the plate to help serve the needs of a Chilton County nonprofit organization.

Her name is April Buchanan, and she, along with her family, began a GoFundMe page to help the Humane Society of Chilton County. She is raising money for a roof for the dogs’ outside running areas at the shelter.

The goal for the GoFundMe page is $8,000, and $3,325 of it has already been raised in a week.

Buchanan started raising money for the Humane Society because she loves animals and knows that the Humane Society has so many needs. “We have a wonderful community of so many who love to help and often many want to do more but are only able to do so much with needs so great, however, if we all do a little, then it becomes much,” Buchanan wrote on the fundraiser page.

The roof that Buchanan wants to help fund will provide shelter for the dogs from heat, rain and other weather conditions during each season. It will allow the dogs the chance to get outside regardless of the weather conditions.

“Life at the shelter can be bleak without being able to enjoy some sunshine or all that each season provides,” Buchanan said. “It’s good not only for their physical health, but emotionally and mentally. We all know how getting outside is good for us as well.”
