The Chilton County Commission will be getting quotes to restore three of the counties storm shelters.

During the commission’s work session on June 22 at 5 p.m., County Administrator Sylvia Singleton told the commissioners that they have been awarded a Community Development Block Grant to restore some of the storm shelters.

“We have been awarded a $30,000 grant, and I worked with Derrick Wright, (Chilton County EMA executive director), to see which ones needed it the most,” Singleton said referring to which storm shelters need the most repairs. “Isabella, Verbena and Gap of the Mountain were the three we thought might benefit first.”

Singleton has received an estimate for a little over $10,000 to sandblast, reseal and pant the exterior of the shelters. However, Commissioner Allen Williams said he has also been looking into restoring the storm shelters, and believes he may have found a better estimate, but did not remember the exact amount, just that it was under $10,000.

The commission will be receiving at least three independent quotes for the job, due to the requirements of the grant. Commissioner Joe Headley and Williams are the commissioners assigned to the maintenance of the county’s storm shelters, and they will be aiding Singleton as needed to receive the quotes and provide the specifications for the shelters.
