VHS highlights student achievement at graduation

Verbena High School celebrated the class of 2021 during graduation on June 1.
As each graduate’s name was read, Principal Tammy Hand gave a brief overview of their high school accomplishments. Many had completed certificates of training at LeCroy Career Technical Center. Many had secured scholarships for college.
Alexis Faust gave the valedictorian speech.
She thanked her teachers and parents for believing in her and encouraging her to do her best.
“We have made a lot of memories in high school that we won’t ever forget,” Faust said.
She highlighted how the class of 2021 had persevered, even through the COVID-19 pandemic, to make it to graduation.
“Whatever we decide to do after high school, we can all do it, if we set our minds to it,” Faust said.
Faust was a member of the VHS Student Government Association, a completer in the LCTC health science program having earned a patient care technician, EKG and CPR certifications, a member of the National Technical Honor Society and received highest honors in the 2021 pre-calculus class. She plans to pursue a degree in nursing at Auburn University’s Montgomery campus.
Faust was co-valedictorian with Hazel Clackley. Clackley was VHS SGA president, member of several campus clubs, a completer in the LCTC STEM program and received highest honors in the 2021 pre-calculus class. She plans to attend Jefferson State Community College before transferring to a four-year university to complete a degree in engineering.
Elizabeth Mims was the salutatorian.
Hand also gave some parting encouragement and advice to the graduates.
“Graduation serves as a launching point projecting you into the next exciting chapter of your life,” Hand said. “Whether you begin a career, enlist in the military, take up a trade or continue your education, be bold, courageous and give it your best.”
She encouraged students to focus on their future goals, rather than focusing on the past.
“It is absolutely essential that you take responsibility for your life, it you wish to succeed,” Hand said.
She reminded the graduates that they had persevered to get to this point and that perseverance will continue to be necessary in the future.
“You made it, and we are so proud of you,” Hand said. “It has been and honor and a privilege watching your progress, and I will keep up and follow your success. Go out there and be amazing.”
