The Clanton City Council discussed purchasing Public Works employee uniforms in their work session on May 20.

The uniforms would be for city workers in the sanitation, street, beautification, parks and water works areas. The uniforms will have high visibility features built in, eliminating the need for high visibility vests to be worn as well. This would help protect city workers and give them a more professional look, according to Jeff Zissette, director of public works.

“They need to look professional for one, but they also need to be safe,” Zissette said. “…Just going up to someone’s front door… if they’re in a uniform, things look a lot better than if they come up and just have blue jeans and a T-shirt for people who don’t know who they are.”

The uniforms will have a patch of the Clanton city seal and supervisors will have different uniforms so that they stand out more. Every employee will have 11 shirts and pants, as well as a jacket given to them. Supervisors will have polo shirts without the high visibility striping, slightly different pants and a high visibility vest, Zissette stated.

“The idea is, they will have five turned into for laundry and still have five for the next week with an extra for emergencies,” Zissette said.

As part of the three-year contract, all uniform repairs and replacements will be covered for the 73 employees in Public Works with the $573 weekly fee the city would be paying. The two companies they will be considering are UniFirst and Cintas. Zissette recommended the UniFirst bid over the one from Cintas.

“I have used Cintas in the past where I have worked, and it was all right,” Zissette said. “The UniFirst uniforms have striping lower on the leg, and they seem to have a more quality clothing.”

The Clanton City Council will be voting to purchase the uniforms on May 24.
