Reset GED program is offering free GED prep classes for Chilton County residents.

Classes are offered Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon with a semester lasting for 60 days.

“We have it so someone can get their GED in 60 days, so they can go ahead and find work or go to school or whatever it is they are trying to accomplish,” Tamera Hinton of Reset said.

All of the supplies are provided by the organization.

While some prep programs use a curriculum where students work at their own pace,
Reset has a teacher presenting information on the necessary content areas of math, science, language and social studies during the classes.

The program also has practice tests for the students to take.

However, the actual GED tests, one for each subject, are taken at Kelsey’s Place. The tests cost $30 each, so $120 for the entire GED. This cost is not covered by Reset, but Hinton said some may qualify for vouchers from Community Action to cover the cost. Voucher eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis and on income.

The next 60-day semester begins in September.

“We have had a pretty good response,” Tamera Hinton said.

This year so far, the program has seen two people successfully pass the tests and receive their GED.

A typical class has 10-12 people.

Hinton said she wanted to be a part of the GED program to fill a need in the community.

“There is a great need for it,” Rhonda Joyner of Reset said.

Joyner teaches the classes, and Hinton handles the organizational aspect of the nonprofit.
