The Clanton City Council unanimously approved a resolution to request the state legislature pass local legislation allowing the sale of draft beer in the city limits during a meeting on April 12.

The amendment will have to be approved by the state legislature, and then be approved by ordinance by the Clanton City Council, which requires two readings.

The amendment would permit sale of draft beer for consumption on the premises and the sale of growlers (maximum of 64 ounces) of draft beer to be sold for off-site consumption. However, sale of beer kegs would still be prohibited.

Businesses would be required to get the appropriate license from the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board prior to sale.

A moratorium on metal buildings was also passed prohibiting any additional such buildings on Highways 22, 31 and 145 within the city limits.

Mayor Jeff Mims said this will give the city the opportunity to amend the building code of the city with an ordinance requiring a façade to match the traditional look of downtown.

Mims said the wording of such an ordinance would be approved by the Clanton Planning Commission, and then brought to the City Council for approval. It would require two readings to pass.

The first reading of a proposed increase to the lodging tax was completed during the April 12 meeting. A vote on the 2% increase, which would bring the city’s rate to 6%, is expected at a future meeting when the second reading of the ordinance is held.

Also during the meeting, the Council approved:

• Amendments to the wrecker service requirements for those the city uses to house vehicles linked to an investigation, such as a fatality. The additional requirements include having a concrete floor and a way to heat and cool the room the car is in.
• Waiving the municipal fee for the Clanton Kiwanis Club Carnival.
• Paying for a resurfacing of the YMCA of Chilton County gym, which is in a building owned by the City of Clanton. A bid from Covington for $58,350 with a 25-year warranty was unanimously approved.
• Repairing a garbage truck for $29,923.
• The quarterly donation to the Chilton/ Clanton Public Library.
