Locals place in Southeastern Livestock Expo

Lexi Bolding of Maplesville in Chilton County exhibited the 4th overall animal during the Market Show at the Jr. Beef Expo. As 4th overall, she received a $2,000 scholarship from Farm Bureau Bank. She also exhibited the champion Mainetainer. The contest was held March 19 at the Teague Arena in Montgomery. Several Chilton County youth recently competed at the Alabama Farmers Federation Southeastern Livestock Expo. Abby Allred, Lillian Smith and Claire Smith of Jemison, Hannah Grace Childress of Thorsby, and Lexi Bolding of Maplesville all competed and placed during the event. Lexi Bolding exhibited fourth place overall during the Market Show. As fourth place overall, Bolding received a $2,000 scholarship from Farm Bureau Bank.

Allred of Jemison exhibited the champion Shorthorn Plus at the Jr. Beef Expo Heifer Show as well as the champion Shorthorn. Lillian Smith exhibited the reserve champion Hereford and reserve champion Chianina. Claire Smith exhibited the reserve champion Shorthorn Plus. Hannah Childress exhibited the champion Alabama Bred & Owned Shorthorn Plus. Lexi Bolding exhibited the champion Mainetainer.
Handler, Abby Allred began showing goats as a child and cattle at age 12. Now age 19, Allred still enjoys competing and hopes to continue throughout college at Auburn and carry over into her future career as a veterinarian.
“To prepare for the competition, I feed the cows twice a day, wash and dry them daily to make sure they are fluffy and fresh,” said Allred. “We do walking exercises and handle them every day. You don’t want them to be timid. You need to be able to set them up and be confident. The handler staying confident is key.”
The next show will be June 21-26 in Louisville, Kentucky.
“I love being around animals,” said Allred. “They have always been part of my life. I grew up on a farm and was in FFA in high school. That is just part of who I am.”
