The Chilton County Sheriff’s Office responded to the main campus of Verbena High School after a gun was found around 10:30 a.m. on March 5.

According to information from CCSO, “a loaded weapon was found by a school resource officer. The weapon was secured, along with the person that was in possession of it. All students and personnel are safe!”

Names related to the incident are not being released as the investigation is ongoing.

“The discovery of this weapon is a direct result of effective communication between our school resource officers and their students,” CCSO stated in a Facebook post. “We are satisfied in knowing this program has built so many great relationships within our school systems.”

Chilton County Schools Superintendent Jason Griffin said the school system is continuing to work with law enforcement “to verify everything is safe and secure” and nothing was missed.

“Once law enforcement had secured the scene we did an all call to parent/guardians,” Griffin said.

In a Facebook post, the school system thanked the Sheriff’s Office “resource officer and school administration for handling the issue.”

By 11:25 a.m., classes and activities were proceeding as usual.
