The Calera Police Department has arrested Cody Rel Robertson, 29, of Calera “related to the illegal sale and purchase of stolen catalytic converters,” according to a release by the department.

The arrest was made on Dec. 4, and Robertson was charged with a Class B felony.

“Additional charges and defendants are pending,” according to the release.

Multiple local law enforcement agencies are working on cases related to the theft of catalytic converters.

Just as stealing is a crime so is the purchase of stolen property.

“When we catch an individual stealing our goal is to also catch individuals purchasing stolen merchandise,” Calera Police Department stated. “If there were not people knowingly buying stolen converters there would not be a reason to steal them.”

The Chilton County Sheriff’s Office, Jemison Police Department, Montevallo Police Department and the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office are a part of this investigation.

Because there have been widespread thefts, additional arrests are anticipated.

Chilton County Sheriff John Shearon said there were several areas in Chilton County that had thefts reported.

“We feel like there are probably more arrests coming,” Shearon said. “This is not a one-time thing.”

Multiple law enforcement agencies continue to research leads.

Shearon said residents and churches need to continue to take precautions to protect their vehicles. He encouraged churches to have someone drive the van home, so it would not be in an empty parking lot or to install security camera and parking in a well-lit spot.

Drivers are encouraged not to leave their cars in parking lots overnight.
