Community members are rallying to raise funds to replace the playground at Higgins Ferry Park.

Project Chairman Durwood Brown and Kathy Giles have made presentations to several local governments and other organizations asking for funds.

On Oct. 27, Brown told the Chilton County Commission that the committee is still $6,000 away from its goal. The Commission has committed $35,000 to the project. The Lake Mitchell Home Owners and Boat Owners Association and several private donors have also contributed.

A price quote from GameTime shows that the playground equipment and installation will cost $65,985. This would include a play structure with slides, multiple swings and ribbon ball.

The project would also involve installing a new drainage pipe, removing the old equipment and adding a fence.

The current playground equipment has several issues that were cited during a recent inspection.

“This improvement project is sorely needed to enhance the safety and enjoyment of families and visitors to the parks,” the committee’s press release states. “… This playground will not only help with the children’s mental, physical and emotional needs during this pandemic, but well after it’s over also.”

Brown said in his update to the County Commission that the pavilion can be rented at Higgins Ferry and would be a great place for families to celebrate special days, if there was a place for the children to play.

An account for Higgins Ferry Playground Project has been set up at River Bank and donations can be made directly to it in person.

Brown said donations can also be made via checks made out to “Higgins Ferry Playground Project” and mailed to HF Playground project c/o Durwood Brown, 120 County Road 713, Clanton, AL 35046.
