Two graduates were honored for completion of the His Steps for Women Inc. 12-step addiction recovery program by Probate Judge Jason Calhoun at the courthouse on Sept. 25.

Brenda Young started His Steps for Women Inc. about two years ago and is grateful for the opportunity to help those in need.

The nonprofit organization’s goal is to provide a place to go for women who are dealing with addiction or have hit hardships in life and need a place to call home.

According to Young, about six women have completed the recovery program in the past two years and another 20 or so have used it as a place to stay while they get their life back in order.

She started it after several people shared that they thought she would be perfect in that role and spent much time praying about it before deciding.

“I didn’t think I could do it,” Young said. “I’m just a country girl that loves the Lord.”

However, she is glad she chose to create the initiative and looks forward to offering help to many more in the future.

“I love my girls,” Young said. “I really do. I get as much out of it as I give.”

According to Young, she has learned it takes a proper mix of an ability to love everybody while also being able to be tough on those you love.

Chilton County Department of Human Resources has sent some over to take part in the organization.

“I teach a lot of life skills,” Young said.

Those teachings include a Christian-based approach and focuses on God.

All the participants in the program are there because they chose that option or heard about it and just showed up one day in need of help.

Unfortunately, that means some leave the house before they are completely ready to live on their own in the world again.

“You can’t make them stay,” Young said. “You can just give them the resources to make the right decision. They know that they can always pick up the phone, and I will do what I can to help them.”

Anybody wanting to help can go to any Regions Bank and provide a monetary donation into the His Steps for Women Inc. account setup at the bank.

Donations of supplies are also welcomed. Visit the His Steps for Women Inc. Facebook page for more details.

“We are always in need of clothes and food,” Young said.
