The Isabella Mustangs capped a crazy week with a 21-20 late game victory on the road against Class 5A Greenville.

The week began with Billingsley, the Mustangs (4-1) scheduled opponent cancelling due to COVID-19 quarantining, which led to the Isabella coaching staff scrambling to find and available replacement during game week.

Isabella worked out a deal with Greenville to play and proved to not be intimidated by the step up in class, as they scored a game-winning drive with 2:09 left in the contest.

Immediately after tying the game with a 12-yard touchdown run, starting quarterback Jake Logan hit fellow senior Anthony Fjeldstad on a successful two-point conversion to put Isabella out in front by one point.

From there, the defense clamped down and preserved the victory as the offensive and defensive units both had their heroic moments that led to the win.

Defensively, the Mustangs limited Greenville’s offense to just 155 total yards.

Austin Jones led the team with 14 tackles, while Anthony Fjeldstad and Caleb Washington combined for three sacks and a fumble recovery up front, and Braxden Giles had a pair of pass breakups and an interception on the back end.

As a result, it was a struggle for Greenville to get points on the scoreboard. One of their three touchdowns came following a fumble recovery returned 98 yards for a score.

Isabella was at the Greenville 2-yard line and knocking on the door of the end zone prior to the turnover that resulted directly into points.

Logan had another productive night as he fell two yards shy of the century mark running the ball, but was able to find the end zone twice on the ground, the second of which was from 12 yards out to tie the game.

He also completed eight of 16 passes for 87 yards. Of his eight completions, five different receivers caught a pass.

J.J. Wilson demonstrated his versatility out of the backfield, as he hauled in three of those passes for 25 yards and also ran for 73 yards and a score on nine carries.

Not only did Isabella earn a massive win for the program, but they did so without some of their usual starters who were quarantining.

Next up for the Mustangs is a home game against Highland Home, as they re-enter region play on Oct. 2 beginning at 7 p.m.
