Thorsby High School announced that it will hold its senior night festivities for all fall sports prior to the start of the season opening football game against Jemison on Aug. 20.

It is tradition to hold senior night in conjunction with the final home game of that respective sports season.

However, this was a decision that was made due to the circumstances of the current pandemic and the week-to-week uncertainty that may lead to games being cancelled during the season.

“There’s a lot of uncertainty about the fall sports season right now,” Thorsby Principal Corey Clements said. “We’ve already had one home game cancelled, and another one is in limbo.”

Thorsby’s season opener is looking strong to be played with less than one week away from its scheduled date.

The spring sports last school year were the first to be impacted with game cancellations due to COVID-19. As a result, many seniors who played spring sports had to be honored through makeshift means, such as drive-thru goodbyes.

Not just football, but all fall sports seniors, band and cheerleaders will be honored before the season opener.

“We wanted to make sure that all of the student-athletes that have represented our school over the last six years are recognized for their commitment to our school and community,” Clements said. “Our spring sports student athletes didn’t get that opportunity in May, so we want to make sure that doesn’t happen again.”

The senior night ceremonies will begin at 6:15 p.m. with the game set for 7 p.m.
