The Maplesville Town Council opened bids for a repaving project for Shepard Hill Road during its meeting on July 13.

The project was awarded to Central Alabama Asphalt on the condition that it passes the engineer’s approval. The vote was unanimous. Council members Patty Crocker and John Caudle were absent.

Town Clerk Dawn Smitherman said the engineer reviews the bids to make sure they meet the project specifications. However, he was unable to attend the July 13 meeting.

A sewer drain installation on Mulberry Street has been completed. This means Wiregrass should be able to complete the paving project on that road, according to an update the Council received at the meeting.

The Council awarded commendations to police officers Josh Hubbard, Jason Reeves and Chris Jones for their work on a rescue call during the meeting.

As a thank you to the police department for all of their assistance on calls, the Maplesville Volunteer Fire Department will be using some of the funds it has raised to treat the Maplesville Police Department to a meal for each of the offices at a local restaurant.

The Council also approved the annual agreement with the Alabama Department of Transportation for the town to cut the grass on the state right of way. Smitherman said the town will receive $3,000 for the year from the state for providing this service.

Town leadership will also be moving forward with getting the tax parcels added to the town when the boundary was extended properly onto the tax map. Smitherman said the Council has approved calling in an outside organization that specializes in this to complete the project at the recommendation of the town attorney. Miles Mayberry at Alabama State university will be contacted to see if this is something he does, according to Smitherman.
