MHS recognizes graduates

Maplesville High School honored the Class of 2020 during a graduation ceremony on June 9.
Valedictorians Gavin Jones and Corey Stephens and Salutatorian Ryan Morrow each gave a speech during the event.
Jones thanked those who had helped him make it to this moment.
“With all the ups and downs, this class has stood by each other’s side,” Jones said.
He talked about how their senior year had been thrown a “curve ball” and not what any of them had expected.
“In this life when we are faced with adversity, you have to make a choice — you can either give up or you can use that pressure as an excuse or you can stand tall in the face of adversity,” Jones said. “Going through adversity you learn a lot about yourself … Success depends on how much effort you put into the job.”
He encouraged his fellow graduates to look for the positive in the future.
Stephens thanked everyone in attendance.
He emphasized that in times full of uncertainty, people can still control their attitude.
“We must make it a point to go forward with purpose,” Stephens said.
He expressed appreciation to his parents and the teachers at MHS.
“There are going to be hard times,” Morrow said. “There are going to be days, when you don’t want to get up and do anything, but you have to push yourself and make yourself better as you do it.”
He shared two scripture verses that have meant a lot to him in life — Philippians 4:13 and 1 Corinthians 10:13-14. Both verses talk about finding strength in God.
He encouraged his fellow graduates to “never give up and do your best.”
Morrow spoke about how the graduating class had been there for each other and had a strong bond together, staying in contact despite in-person classes being canceled because of the pandemic.
“We laugh at all of the memories that we had and will remember for the rest of our lives,” Morrow said. “We found a way to make situations better by being there for each other.”
