A firearm was found in the possession of Clanton Elementary student the morning of March 10.

Chilton County Schools has released a statement on its Facebook page stating that students were safe at all times and the incident was addressed quickly.

“The school administration responded quickly and Clanton School Resource Officer was on campus to assist,” the post said. “At no time was the school in danger. Thanks to Clanton Police Department for assisting with this and taking care of it quickly. The student will be dealt with according to law and board policy.”

In a phone interview, Superintendent Jason Griffin said he was “glad it was handed safely.”

Disciplinary action for the student in such cases is determined on a case-by-case basis following the school system’s code of conduct, Griffin said.

Local law enforcement decides in cases like this whether to charge an individual with a crime.

Clanton Elementary has grades preschool through second grade.
