The Town of Maplesville received a favorable audit report during this month’s Town Council meeting Feb. 10.

For the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2019, the town had a net financial position of $1,564,264.

Janice Hull of Hull & Russell presented information from the audit at the meeting. She highlighted that although the town had spent more than the revenue for the year this was specifically for a road project, and the town had existing funds in the budget to cover the difference.

The Town of Maplesville continues to operate without long-term debt.

Finances continued to be a focus of the meeting as the council voted to set the salary for the next term, which will begin after the Aug. 25 election.

Raising the salary for mayor from $500 to $800 and the salary for council members from $100 to $150 was approved 3 to 1. John Caudle, Sheila Hall and Richard Davis voted in favor. Hal Harrison voted against. Patty Crocker was absent.

“I just thought the town could use the money for something else,” Harrison said.

He did not have a specific project in mind but said the council members served as public servants and not for the money.

A donation of $4,250 was approved for the American Cancer Society. Town Clerk Dawn Smitherman said half of this will go toward research and the other half will be for providing transportation for patients to medical appointments.

Also during the meeting, the Council approved:

• Larry Norred as a reserve officer with Maplesville Police Department.
• Having Mayor W. C. Hayes pursue applying for a Transportation Alternative Set Aside Program grant for sidewalk improvements. Hayes will research whether an application would be “feasible.” The deadline for application is May 15.
• Reappointing Bill Pearce and Tammy Irvin to the Maplesville Utilities Board. Each will serve for a six-year term to begin May 2020.
