A vote to renew the 10 mills of local property tax collected for Chilton County Schools passed with 1,063 votes cast in favor, according to information from the Chilton County Probate Court. There were 202 votes cast against.

“We are pleased that the tax renewal passed, and we are thankful to the voters for the support of our school system, “Chilton County Schools Superintendent Jason Griffin said.

The approval continues a tax that has been in place for about 40 years and was last renewed with a minor change 20 years ago. This vote renews the tax for 30 years.

The rate of 10 mills is the lowest amount of local education property tax funding required by the state.

The Chilton County Board of Education had passed a resolution to move forward with requesting the renewal vote. The Chilton County Commission later moved forward with a vote to hold the renewal election.

Griffin said the school system will continue to receive funds as normal, and the timing of the vote would not impact when the school system received funding.
