IHS celebrates student achievements

Isabella High School celebrated the achievements of students in preschool through third grade during the Celebration Parade on Feb 12.
Jillian Green, school counselor for kindergarten-sixth grade, encouraged those present to cheer for the students as they displayed the accomplishment that they were most proud of this school year.
“We want everyone up and having a great time and celebrating,” Green said.
Each student held a poster stating the accomplishment they were celebrating as they walked across the gymnasium and stepped onto a small platform. Audiences of family members, friends and older students cheered for the students throughout the event as each poster was presented.
Members of the elementary student leadership team also helped open and close the event. Student Kevin Hernandez welcomed all of the visitors to the event and introduced IHS Principal Ricky Porter.
Porter said the achievements being celebrated were in a variety of areas.
“We want to celebrate the greatness and the accomplishments of every single student,” Porter said. “Every single student has greatness. Every single student has things that they have accomplished and we are here today to celebrate those things … We are all great at something.”
He said not every student is great academically or athletically, but the event gave students an opportunity to focus what they were good at.
“Every single one of us can find something to celebrate in our lives,” Porter said. “That is part of what the Leader in Me program is about.”
IHS began using the Leader in Me program a few years ago, and became an official Leader in Me school for the 2018-2019 school year. The program uses Stephen R. Covey’s Seven Habits to help students develop leadership skills. As a part of this program, IHS has created student-led leadership teams and incorporated student leadership roles into many of its events.
A similar event for grades fourth through sixth is planned for later in the school year.
