It was a walk through a storybook world for attendees to the annual Jemison Library Fairy Tale Show Feb. 7.
This year’s event featured some new displays as well as some old favorites.
“This is a library fundraiser, so we appreciate all of you guys coming out and supporting us tonight,” Cheryl English of the library said. “All of your donations, and all that you do tonight you will see get poured back into our library and the programs that we are doing. We want to thank you for giving generously to our community.”
English said all of the vendors outdid themselves this year. She also thanked the Jemison Lion’s Club and Leo Club for helping run the event. English and librarian Tammie McGriff organize the event each year.
For Jemison High School’s Leo members, it was there first time participating in the event.
Tara Allred, sponsor for the club, said students wanted to do something for those “not into princesses.” They chose “Monsters Inc.” for their theme and handed out headbands with monster eyes on them. Allred said she enjoys how “childhood fears get settled … and it becomes a fun thing” in the movie. The club members also helped set up for the event.
Also participating for a first time were of Hype All Stars cheerleaders dressed as Dalmatians.
“It’s fun being with all my cheer friends and being able to do this,” Evie Gray said.
The group also performed on stage during the event.
A number of crafts were available throughout the night, including coloring a picture to decorate Boo’s Room from “Monsters Inc.,” making a dog collar and creating a “Forky” friend from “Toy Story 4.”
A group of pirates brought adventure to the night as they asked attendees to help them find the missing key to the treasure box.
Just inside the entry to the event was an Little Woman Who Lived in a Shoe slide hosted by the Miss Peach Queens.
“We were trying to find something that was unique and fun and active that everybody could do,” Miss Peach Marybeth Porter said. “My dad Phillip Porter build it, and we did get to help paint and put it together.”
Junior Miss Peach Sophie Porter said she enjoyed “how different and creative” the theme was. “I really like the slide, and I feel like the kids would really like that,” Young Miss Peach Lexie Deavers said.
The group was also giving put coloring pages and lollipops.
Alabama winners in the National Extraordinary Miss pageant portrayed some favorite Disney Villains.
“We thought Disney villains would be good because it ties in with everyone else’s themes all together,” Miss Yellowhammer State Teen Gina Jones said.
She said she chose the evil stepmother from “Snow White” because it was one of her favorite Disney movies.
Disney also served as inspiration for the Relay For Life Queens, who dressed as characters from “Toy Story 4.”
“We went and watched the movie together, and the movie was really fun to watch together,” Miss Relay for Life Alyssa Zeigler said.
Several attendees also came dressed as favorite characters. Young Eli Prather dressed as a knight to guard the princess.
“Alice in Wonderland” came to life thanks to the Miss YMCA queens.
“I think we chose Alice in Wonderland because it’s fun, and it’s not something that you see all the time,” Miss YMCA Annabel Mullinax said.
She said she enjoys “how mysterious” the story is “and all of the lessons and journeys she goes through along the way.”
