The Clanton Planning Commission approved a rezoning request from residential (single family/ two family residential district R-2) to general business district for a property on Second Avenue South during the Jan. 15 meeting.

The request will now go to the Clanton City Council for consideration.

Mayor Billy Joe Driver said the majority of the block was already zoned for business.

Property owner Allen Caton requested the zoning change in order to have an office for his company Allen Caton Acoustical & Dry Wall on the site. Caton said he plans to leave the house that is on the property largely untouched on the exterior. The inside will be used as an office.

A structure for storage of equipment is planned for the site. Building inspector Gene Martin said Caton would need to receive approval of a special exception from the Board of Adjustments and Appeals to warehouse equipment on the site.

The plan is for the building to be enclosed on three sides with the open side facing the Alabama Power substation across the street.

Martin also emphasized that any new structure would need to be 25 feet away from the property line or the street on the front and back and 20 feet from the property line on the remaining sides.

Drawings of Caton’s proposed building will be reviewed by the city at a later date.
