Spontaneous fun and learning new acting skills is the focus of the Central Alabama Performing Arts Guild’s newest event.

Improv Comedy Games will be hosted at the Chilton-Clanton Public Library on Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. and feature direction by Gabe Evans of the Birmingham Improv Theatre.

“Two of our newer members, Cole Riley and Craig Isley, have a background in improv acting and brought the idea to our board as a new event,” Mary Schiermann of CAPA Guild said. “Gabe Evans taught improv at Montevallo University … and is now director of the Birmingham Improv Theatre. Gabe has agreed to shepherd us into learning about improv theatre through our Improv Comedy Game event. The goal is to build our own troupe of improv actors from our community, become comfortable with this style of performance art, and then venture out to other community theatre groups/sites and share what we have learned.”

This opportunity is free and appropriate for all ages. This fun workshop will teach “the fundamentals of improvisational comedy,” according to a press release from the Guild.

Gabe “will do a quick one-hour crash course in the basics of improv followed by time for improv games based around scene work as well as perhaps some long form played in the slacker style,” according to the press release.

Participants can simply show up, registration is not required.

Improv Comedy Games is one of a schedule of activities the Guild plans to host in 2020. Other plans include the addition of a literary guild as well as the annual spring radio play and summer stage play.

“We keep a busy calendar and are proud to afford creative expression opportunities to all in our community, young and old alike,” according to a release.

The Guild is a nonprofit organization and membership is free.
