Chilton County voters registered at precinct 140 will have a new location to visit during the 2020 presidential primary election on March 3.

The voting locale will change from Union Grove Fire Station to Union Grove Baptist Church following the Chilton County Commission’s approval during its meeting on Nov. 26.

However, the change will not be made in time for the special election for the education tax renewal on Feb. 11.

According to Probate Judge Jason Calhoun, a voting precinct change has to take place within 90 days of an election. The special election does not fit within that parameter.

Calhoun stated that the move was due to the area outgrowing the space available at Union Grove Fire Station. He reiterated that the fire station did an excellent job over the years, but it was just a necessary change.

Chilton County Chamber of Commerce President Billy Singleton also informed the Commission of the organization’s plan to build a pavilion to the left of the courthouse.

It would replace the current structure that sits there and will have benches, historic markings and Corinthian columns holding up the roof.

According to Singleton, the Chamber’s board already voted to approve the project and established a 501(c)(3) to get the funding needed for it.

Bids were opened for the construction of the bathhouse at Minooka Park and the jail commissary. Decisions on both will be decided at the next Commission meeting on Dec. 10.

The Commission gave permission for EMA Director Derrick Wright to solicit bids for interactive screens funded by a grant.

Dirt work was approved for the basketball, volleyball and playground areas at Minooka Park. The county will do the work.

Whitney Barlow was appointed to the CAWACO Board and Matt Mims was nominated to the Chilton Medical Center Board.
