As a part of the annual tree lighting, Bettye and Doyle Glass were recognized for their dedication to the community by being named the 2019 Mr. and Mrs. Jemison.

“This is a shock, a real shock,” Bettye Glass said.

Librarian Tammie McGriff said the couple is involved with every community event but never wants recognition for their efforts.

“This couple has done so much for the community,” McGriff said. “They are amazing.”

They were also influential in having Mr. and Mrs. Claus at the tree lighting event.

Doyle Glass was raised in Jemison and attended each of the Jemison schools before graduating from Jemison High School in 1951.

Bettye Glass said she is from another county, but the couple has been in Jemison for 12 years.

“We enjoy being with the people here,” Doyle Glass said. “We enjoy talking with the mayor.  We have had some good experiences with events just like this tonight.”

Bettye Glass said the recognition “means a great deal.”

“Since he is from here, we have … appreciated so much (that) when we drive into the city it looks so clean. Everyone is so sweet, so nice, and it has just been a pleasure to be associated with … everyone in the community.”

The Christmas tree lighting is one of the many events the Glasses have enjoyed.

“I just think it’s a great night. Good people to associate with,” Doyle Glass said.

He said he “was impressed” with the leadership of Jemison.
