Property was a reoccurring theme during the Clanton City Council meeting on Nov. 25.

The Council unanimously approved a change order of $221,000 for the industrial park north in Lomax.

Mayor Billy Joe Driver said unanticipated work was needed on Industrial Drive and Bama Lane, the main roads into the site.

Purchasing a piece of property adjoining City Park was unanimously approved. The property includes a house and two or three acres for $100,000.

“The city owns all the property all the way around it,” Driver said.

The former property owners will be granted a two-year lease to remain on the property at a rate of $400 a month.

Another lease holder had submitted to end their lease as of Dec. 31. The Council discussed the fact that the lease holder had sublet a portion of the building, which was in violation of the rent agreement. Council members discussed that the person sublet without their knowledge and that this person would also have to leave by Dec. 31.

City attorney John Hollis Jackson said the Council had no legal obligation to allow the person who had sublet a portion of the building to remain because this person had never signed an official agreement with the city.

Ending the lease as of Dec. 31 was approved.

Also during the meeting, Chilton County Chamber of Commerce President Billy Singleton presented information on a project the Chamber has plans to upgrade the pavilion near the Chilton County Courthouse and across the street from City Hall. Singleton said the project would be completed using donated funds.

Council approval is needed to move forward with the project.

“It’s just a way to give back to the community,” Singleton said.

Also during the meeting, the City Council approved:

• Paying the bills.
• Making a parks and recreation employee full-time.
• Allowing the Clanton Fire Department to apply for another grant to purchase more emergency communication radios. Fire Chief David Driver said he would be applying for a grant from Firehouse Subs that would not require any local matching funds.
