CES class performs fun fairy tale play

Tonja Crumpton’s class at Clanton Elementary had an extra element to their Halloween party as students performed a short play for parents on Oct. 31.
The play used several variations on classic fairy tale stories.
As a Little Lost Witch visits the home of classic characters, she is looking for a place to stay. She is eventually welcomed by a group of children about to have a Halloween party.
Crumpton said the play was one she had used every year when she taught 15 years ago, before leaving education to be with her children. Now that she is working in education again, Crumpton decided to use the script once more.
She said the play gives the students a chance to be creative in spite of all the other academic demands.
“It is not something that we have a lot of time to do,” Crumpton said.
Being pressed for time was a challenge to getting the 18 students ready. However, after 10 minutes a day for about three weeks, each of the students knew there part well.
Before practices began, students auditioned for the part they wanted to play.
Many were nervous on the performance day but were able to overcome the feelings to say and sing their lines.
Molly Coppedge, who played the lead character the Little Witch, was one such student.
“I was nervous about the song,” Molly said.
However, once the play started her nerves subsided.
She said she enjoyed her part because she got to sing.
The song that Little Red Riding Hood’s parents sang in the play was Molly’s favorite part.
For Mac Ousley, it was his character’s strength that drew him to wanting to be one of the Three Billy Goats Gruff.
He said is part was his favorite part of the play.
Attendees to the play were invited to the classroom for treats after the performance.
