Maplesville approves road repaving bid

Several road resurfacing projects in Maplesville are moving forward following a vote by the Maplesville Town Council.

The Council approved Wiregrass Construction as the lowest and best price for the project with a bid of $248,625.50.

Roads to be resurfaced in the project include Mulberry, Mobile and Railroad streets, Parnell and Graham avenues and Brown Lane.

Approval of the bid was unanimous.

Other financial matters were addressed at the meeting, including unanimously approving up to $2,000 to fix lighting on Main and Railroad streets, a donation to the Chilton Education Foundation, an ad in Civil Air Patrol magazine, 25 cents per hour raises for Maplesville Police Officer Jason Reeves and employee Melvin Morton as well as a $1,000 donation to Old Town Christmas.

Old Town Christmas will be held 2:30 -5:30 p.m. on Dec. 1 in downtown Maplesville. Main Street and a portion of Railroad Street will be closed from 1-6 p.m.

Also during the meeting, The Council

  • Moved its next meeting to Nov. 18 at 6 p.m.  Whether to approve a resolution that would allow SouthCoast Paper to receive Alabama Enterprise Zone tax credits at no cost to the town will be considered.  Town Hall will be closed on Nov. 11 for Veterans Day.
  • Appointed W.C. Hayes to the Chilton County Industrial Development Authority.
  • Amended the employee paid time off policy to allow 80 hours to roll over from a previous year. Town Clerk Dawn Smitherman said paid time off is accrued at a rate of four hours per month and is used for vacation, personal days and sick days.
  • Approved selling a surplus 1992 Ford truck to Rembert Warren, who had submitted a bid of $1,656.
