Trinity Episcopal Church in Clanton will be participating in the Healing Day National Bell Ringing on Aug. 25.

The nationwide observance was initiated by the National Park Service as a way to reflect on the first landing of a ship carrying slaves to the United States at what became Fort Monroe in Virginia in 1619. The site is now the Fort Monroe national Monument and is a part of the park service.

The Park Service has asked churches and communities to join National Parks in a day of remembrance.

Presiding Bishop Michael Curry for The Episcopal Church has encouraged local churches to participate.

Trinity Episcopal Rev. Deacon Mark Likos said the event will begin at 1:30 p.m. with an outdoor reception and bell ringing at 2 p.m.

The Great Commission Christian Center, a nearby church, will join Trinity in the observance. The plan is for students from the churches to ring the bell.

Likos said the event is a time for the church and community to reflect on the impact that this event 400 years ago had on the country.

“This is a time that we can ask for healing for what we have done as a nation,” Likos said.

The churches encourage community members to attend.

The reception will include cookies, tea and lemonade.

If it rains on Aug. 25, all events will held inside Trinity Episcopal Church.

Trinity Episcopal is located at 503 Second Ave. S in Clanton.
