The Humane Society of Chilton County, in partnership with Pies By Mike, will be hosting a fundraiser on May 8.

Pies purchased between 6:30-11:30 a.m. at 808 Logan Road will qualify for the fundraiser.

The event was discussed during a board meeting on April 25.

Renee Helms of the Humane Society said 20 percent of all cash sales and 10 percent of all debit/credit sales would be given to the Humane Society of Chilton County.

“Mother’s Day is that weekend, so they can get them for Mother’s Day,” Renee Helms said.

She said the company has breakfast pies in addition to dessert pies.

A Facebook page will be created for the event.

The Humane Society is on track to have one fundraiser each month through the summer.

The organization raised $2,277 with Bow Wow Bingo at the Clanton Country Club in April.

“We had a lot of fun, and a lot of good people pitched in,” board president Lee Helms said.

Several prizes were donated by local businesses for the event. Items that were not used at the bingo event will be up for bid at the auction fundraiser on June 8 at 7 p.m. at Hidden Meadow Winery.

Another Pies By Mike fundraiser with a different format is also scheduled for August. For the August fundraiser, tickets will be sold in advance for $20 for community members to pick up pies.

The March financials were presented at the April 25 meeting, showing that the Humane Society had ended the month with $3,964.98.

Director Jennifer Fesmire said there were 93 animals at the shelter.

During the month of March, 170 animals, including one parakeet that was sent to a rescue, had come into the shelter. Another 94 animals were sent to rescue organizations. Eighteen animals were adopted, three died in the shelter and three were euthanized.

Also during the meeting, the board reviewed proper procedures for investigating potential animal abuse situations.
