Maplesville High School welding students will soon have new safety equipment thanks to a grant from the Chilton Education Foundation.

Agriscience teacher Joe Dennis received a grant for $890 to purchase darkening helmets, gloves and welding aprons.

Dennis said the darkening helmets are “much easier than the old style because you can see so much better when you go to weld.”

Students in 10th grade are taught the basics in class, but Dennis makes the equipment available to 11th and 12th grade students for repair projects. Dennis said 60-70 students a year will have access to the equipment.

Dennis said he focuses on safety while teaching students how to use a cutting torch, wire welder and stick welder.

“We just try to give them a base and a lot of them that are interested go over to the trade school (LeCroy Career Technical Center),” Dennis said.
