The Clanton Police Department is investigating the death of a Calera man in connection with an incident in Clanton on Feb. 17.

Capt. David Clackley of CPD released a statement on behalf of the department on Feb. 22.

According to the press release, “At approximately 12:45 a.m., CPD received a call of a subject that had been struck by a vehicle near the 2000 block of Seventh Street South. Officers responded to the scene andfound that a 48-year-old male subject was deceased in the parking lot of a local business.”

The deceased man has since been identified as Jason Brian Turner from Calera

“CPD detective and traffic investigator responded to conduct the investigation,” the release states. “Witness statements and video surveillance indicates that one subject was leaving due to an impending altercation at which time the second subject approached the moving vehicle and held on to it. As the vehicle accelerated, the subject continued to hold the vehicle and run alongside of it. This action resulted in the subject falling in the parking lot. At this time, we have no evidence that the cause of death was criminal in nature.”

The state Medical Examiner’s Office is inspecting the body and will report any information found to the CPD.

“We are awaiting more information from the state medical examiner’s office to determine if the death may have been due to an unknown medical condition,” Clackley stated.

The investigation is ongoing.

“Once all evidence has been obtained and the investigation has concluded, the death investigation as well as any related criminal charges that may develop will be taken before a grand jury,” Clackley stated. “Officer David Hicks will be the case agent for CPD.”
