The Jemison City Council has moved forward with plans to relocate the Jemison Public Library.

During a voting session on Dec. 3, the City Council unanimously approved purchasing a building, which had once served at the Jemison City Hall and a fire station, for $41,000.

The new location will give the library room for expansion. The previous library space at City Hall will be converted into offices to comply with recommended best practices to keep the court clerk’s office separate from other clerks.

In a previous meeting, City Councilmen and Mayor Eddie Reed discussed the potential for the building and the desire to preserve the historic look.

A timeline of when the move could be made was not discussed at either meeting.

The City Council also unanimously voted on Dec. 3 to reject all bids that had been received for a sewer project for Pate Creek (191 Mobile Home park.)

City Administrator Shannon Welch said that even the lowest bid was more than the city could afford.

“We are going to reject the bid, and we are going to do the project in phases,” Welch said. “Doing the project in phases allows us to apply for more grants.”

The City Council approved:

• Donating $1,000 to the Chilton County Education Foundation for the PEECh grant program.
• Contracting with Revenue Discovery Systems to conduct a business license audit. Welch said the company will compare the businesses listed by the state as paying taxes based in Jemison against the list the city has of those who have business licenses. Welch said the company would receive a percentage of the business license fee for companies that it finds are required to have a business license but did not have one prior to the audit.
