Junior Girl Scouts of Troop 337, which meets in Thorsby, raised $290 during its Caterpillar Crawl/ Butterfly Bolt 5K and one-mile fun run.

Organizing and hosting the run was the Girl Scouts Bronze Award project. They hosted the event at Corner Park on Sept. 15.

Troop Leader Amy Jolley said the money will be used to purchase a needed item for Butterfly Bridge Children’s Advocacy Center.

The group was also able to donate several snack items thanks to donations made the day of the race.

“I think it was a great turnout,” Jolley said. “I think the girls worked really hard. We appreciate the community coming out and supporting this.”

Johnny McDaniel and Mona Sansom were the top finishers. Second place for the male group went to Wayne Coppedge. Second place for the women was Mary Beth Easterling and third place went to Lindsey Payton.

After winners were announced, several door prizes were handed out.

Girl Scout Jaden Bryant said she helped make signs and set up for the event. During the event, she helped announce winners and lead the fun run.

“It was for a good cause, and it was fun to do this,” Bryant said.

Bryant has been in Scouts for the past seven years.

Girl Scout Alaina Cantley ran the butterfly craft booth and helped with announcing during the event.

“I like that I was able to announce some things and to participate in the one-mile fun run,” Cantley said.

At her craft table, participants colored coffee filters, then closed a clothespin around the center to create a butterfly.

Jana Zuelzke, executive director for Butterfly Bridge Children’s Advocacy Center, thanked the Troop and those that participated to make the event a success.

The Girl Scouts will submit pictures and forms outlining the event to the Girl Scouts of North Central Alabama office to be certified as the girls’ Bronze Award.

If the girls’ stay in Scouts, they can complete the Silver and Gold awards. Gold is the highest award a Girl Scout can receive and can lead to scholarship money for college.
