Senior Connection in Clanton hosts many events for its members as a way to give county citizens age 55 and older fun activities to take part in.

The next event coming up will be a Seniors Only Dance Aug. 10 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Director Vanessa McKinney said this will be the first event of its kind held at Senior Connection.

“There’s a group that goes every Friday night to Prattville (to dance), and that is a good ways away,” she said. “Several of them got together and decided they would like to try that here. The type of dancing they do down there is not necessarily what everyone wants to do. We wanted to get together and have a band that could play all kinds of genres of music. They do a lot of line dancing down there. We want to also have the waltz and stuff like that. We also need something else for seniors to do around here on the weekends.”

The cost to attend the dance will be $5 per person.

“We will have refreshments like drinks, chips and crackers and things like that for everyone to snack on,” McKinney said.

You do not have to be a member of Senior Connection to take part.

“But, you do have to have to be 55 or older,” said Bobbie Jackson, who is helping McKinney put the event together.

“If you are kind of close to 55, that might be OK,” McKinney added. “No kids allowed, though. It will be nice, clean fun. No drinking or smoking. We’re not going to get real wild.”

McKinney said Walon Smith and Cotton Bird band will be performing.

“They will have DJ music,” McKinney said. “People will be able to request different types of songs and dances.”

“We will do the Twist, and what anyone wants to do,” Jackson added.

McKinney and Jackson said they are excited about the upcoming dance.

“We have all the decorations up,” McKinney said. “We will clear all the chairs out there to have the big dance floor. We have had several phone calls from the surrounding area, so hopefully we will have a good crowd.“
