The Central Alabama Performing Arts annual summer show will be on Aug. 7 and 9.

Each show will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Jemison Municipal Complex auditorium.

Director Sarah Jackson said the group wanted to do a comedy this year.

After reviewing several scripts, “Play On” was chosen.

“We all really fell in love with this one,” Jackson said.

She said just reading through the script for the first time had the group laughing.

Not laughing during rehearsal has proved to be a challenge for the 11 actors.

“Play On” is a family-friendly, comedy/murder mystery about a theater group that is trying to put on a Victorian era play, but everything keeps going wrong.

Jackson said they also “break the fourth wall” and have some audience interaction during the show.

Admission is free.

“We hope they enjoy it as much as we have,” Jackson said.

Central Alabama Performing Arts spends 12 weeks preparing for the annual show.

Jackson said the time goes by quickly.

This year’s cast is mostly adults with a few youth actors. Local youth are a part of the show behind the scenes as stage and tech crews.

Jackson has been with Central Alabama Performing Arts for 18 months. She said she has enjoyed “the combination of the people involved and the creativity involved.”

“We have a lot of local talent that is outstanding,” Jackson said.

“Play On” will be 1 hour and 45 minutes long with a brief intermission.

Jemison Municipal Complex is located at 14 Padgett Lane.
