Maplesville students will have a little extra help getting ready for the 2018-2019 school year, thanks to Hillcrest Baptist Church.

The church is giving away 100 backpacks filled with school supplies on July 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This is the first year for the event.

“We wanted to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way,” Hillcrest Pastor Mark Seals said.

Church members have been collecting school supplies based on the list of needed items for Maplesville classrooms from kindergarten to high school. Seals said the church purchased the backpacks.

Students will also receive a free toothbrush and toothpaste, courtesy of Sarrell Dental.

“I had worked with them in the past and knew they liked to support community events,” Seals said.

In addition, the church will be serving free hot dogs.

Students must be with a parent or guardian during the event. There are no additional requirements for participation.
