Registration is open for Distinguished Diva Camp, hosted by the Distinguished Young Women of Chilton County, this year scheduled for July 9-10, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Chilton County High School in Clanton.

Girls between first and sixth grades across the county are invited to participate in engaging games and activities to learn about Distinguished Young Women and its Be Your Best Self Program.

The Be Your Best Self Program explores five best-self elements encouraging well-roundedness in girls: Be Healthy, Be Involved, Be Studious, Be Ambitious and Be Responsible.

“We reach out to those girls at a younger age to encourage them to stay in school, to not just take those things lightly, also to choose the things they enjoy to do … and then we tie that back in to being healthy,” local DYW chairperson Leslee Deavers said.

“We’re hoping that if we can reach out to these girls at this younger age, by the time that they get up to junior high school and early high school years, then they can become involved as ‘little sisters’ to our participants who will be incoming seniors,” she said.

Registration is $25 per camper, to be turned in with the participant’s name and T-shirt size, a list of any food allergies and a parent’s or guardian’s phone number.

Registration can be mailed to DYW Chilton County at 6640 County Rd. 49 in Clanton or submitted to Kay Clark at Lewis Machine Company in Clanton between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Proceeds from registration fees will be funneled into the Distinguished Young Women scholarship fund.

Deadline to register is July 4.

“We focus on the well-rounded [girls], so not only are we teaching them how to present themselves on stage, but [also] how to speak, how to present themselves, how to dress, so that when they have interviews for college or other scholarships going into their senior year, they will know how to present themselves in those situations,” Deavers said.
