The Clanton city pool is now open through July for summer activities.

Lap swimming, water exercise, swim school, open swim (recreational swimming), private swim lessons and more are available.

The swim team, organized by the YMCA of Chilton County, is hosting tryouts May 5 and May 7 from 5 to 6 p.m. A variety of techniques will be taught, including freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly for the more advanced swimmers

“I actually swam on the last swim team we had in 2005,” swim coach Tiffanee Edwards said.

The competition a child will participate in will be determined by age. Eight years and under will do 25 yards, which would be equivalent to one lap, while 9 years old and older do 50 yards, being two laps.

Competition will begin in three weeks and four meets are on the schedule as of now, moving up from just one last year.

“This is the first summer to have a full schedule,” Edwards said.

The swim team is in the Alabama Recreation Park League (ARPA).

Swim lessons will be going on Mondays at 9 a.m and 6 p.m, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9 a.m, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:30 a.m. and Saturdays at 9 a.m, according to Lori Patterson, CEO director of the YMCA.

Water aerobics will be Wednesdays and Fridays at 8 a.m.

The pool is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Certified lifeguards will be on duty.

YMCA members get in free with proof of their current membership. Cost for non-member is $5. The city pool is also available for private parties upon request.
