Averie Beth Porter has been named the 2018 Miss Chilton County.

Porter said she was “kind of shocked” to hear her named announced as the winner.

“It was kind of surreal,” Porter said. “Honestly, I am still kind of in shock, and I probably will be until I go to the first event.”

She said she was very grateful for this opportunity.

“I am really excited about this experience,” Porter said. “I am going to try and be the best queen I can be, and I do love my county.”

The Miss Chilton County pageant was sponsored by the Evening Lions Club on March 10.

Porter said it was her first time ever competing in the pageant. She said the scholarship and opportunity to represent the county were reasons she wanted to participate.

Porter will also receive a $2,000 scholarship for winning Miss Chilton County.

She said the scholarship winnings will “definitely help me in starting my college career.”

Porter has been accepted to Troy University, where she plans to major in business and minor in biology. Her ultimate career goal is to be a dermatologist.

She will also be trying out for the Troy majorette team.

In preparation for the Miss Chilton County Pageant, Porter said she practiced interview questions with her mom and “trying just to get in shape a little bit because I wanted to look my best.”

“My outfit was actually handmade,” Porter said.

She also rehearsed her introduction.

The interview portion is held before the public portion of the competition.

“I just took a deep breath and went in there, because I knew if I was nervous I wouldn’t do as well,” Porter said.

In addition to questions about herself, the judges asked her what she would do if she were president for a week.

“My answer to that was that my message as president to my fellow Americans would be just to respect one another because there are so many controversial issues that are so much bigger than us that we just need to learn to respect people and realize everyone has an opinion and everyone’s opinion matters,” Porter said.

During her reign, Porter is looking forward to getting to know her 2018 queen sisters: Junior Miss Cameron McGhar, Young Miss Cresley Haggard and Little Miss AnnaKate Gray.

“I am also looking forward to just going out in my community and really serving with my queen sisters,” Porter said.
