The City of Clanton will celebrate Arbor Day by holding its annual tree giveaway on Feb. 20.

Saplings are provided by the Alabama Forestry Commission and are free to community members. The event will begin at 9 a.m. in the parking lot at the corner of Sixth Street and First Avenue.

The tree giveaway has been an annual event in Clanton for at least 16 years.

It is important to consider how tall a tree could grow before planting it near powerlines. The proximity to buildings is also important to consider.

Participating in an Arbor Day observation is one of the things that qualifies Clanton as a Tree City USA community.

Other requirements are having a tree ordinance, an active tree board and a community forestry program. The tree board makes decisions on whether a tree on public land would be cut down.

Alabama was made a statewide observation in 1887.

The local tree ordinance, establishing a local tree commission, was passed in 1984.

“The City Council finds that trees are recognized as a valid asset providing a more healthful and beautiful environment in which to live,” according to the ordinance. “They provide oxygen, shade, esthetics, and a priceless psychological counterpoint to the man-made urban setting. Trees are economically beneficial in attracting new industry, residents and visitors. When the proper varieties are grown in the right place, they enhance the value and marketability of property, and promote the stability of desirable neighborhoods.”
