Isabella defeated Verbena fairly easily 54-8 in the season opener for both county teams on Sept. 1.
It did not take long before the Mustangs took hold of the game with two first quarter touchdowns on 7- and 8-yard runs by Jarred Campbell and Austin Brasher respectively.
“We were getting some positive yards on the ground, and the offensive line did a good job,” Isabella head coach Tate Leonard said.
The Mustangs continued the surge of offense with four more touchdowns in the second quarter.
Brasher scored his second and third rushing touchdowns of the game and Jaqarise Stacy showcased his skill at quarterback with scores on the ground and through the air.
Stacy’s passing touchdown was a pitch-and-catch with Campbell, as Isabella led 41-0 at halftime.
The Mustangs remained in full command during the second half with the clock running in the fourth quarter and many reserves getting an opportunity for playing time.
Verbena erased the shutout on the scoreboard with a touchdown pass from Dawson Rouhrbough to Xavier Dejarnett. The two found each other again for the two-point conversion attempt.
“The score looks bad, but we did a lot of little things,” Verbena head coach Tyler Kelley said. “We didn’t quit and if there’s any takeaway, that is what I’m most proud of.”
Senior Cole Headley stated the game at quarterback for the Red Devils.
Isabella finished with a total of 421 yard of offense and was led on the ground by Brasher with 83 yards on 12 carries.
“We got to play a lot of kids and the effort was wonderful,” Leonard said. “As long as they keep doing that, we’re going to keep getting better.”
