A hit-and-run collision on Highway 155 in Jemison left three ATV drivers injured, one currently in critical condition.

The incident happened around 8:25 p.m. on July 15, completely shutting down Highway 155 while the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) investigated the collision.

“Alcohol is believed to be a factor,” ALEA spokesperson Jesse Thornton said.

According to Thornton, the driver of a 2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo struck three ATVs before leaving the scene, only to be apprehended later with assistance from the Chilton County Sheriff’s Office.

“We assisted with traffic and taking [the driver] into custody at his residence in Jemison,” Shane Mayfield, Chilton County assistant chief deputy, said.

The driver is identified as 61-year-old Dennis Hitt.

Hitt is being held at the Chilton County Jail with three counts of Felony Leaving the Scene of an Accident and three counts of Assault 1st Degree with a $30,000 surety bond.
