The town of Thorsby has a new website that features an updated look and allows for easier access to the information taking place around town.

Updated profiles and contact information for the mayor and each of the Council members and department heads are available, as well as other information that may be necessary to residents.

An example of this is the addition of a link under the fire department tab that brings up a map of all the fire hydrants located throughout inside the town limits.

Those may seem like the slightest of changes, but can prove extremely valuable for residents during certain situations.

Also included on the site’s homepage is the weekly weather forecast and a list of news happenings in the community.

The new website can be found at thorsbyal.com.

Public works director Terry Jackson reminded the Council that the town would be hosting a class about the techniques used by the water department at Helen Jenkins Chapel beginning July 10.

The course will be held two nights a week for six weeks. Each class will start around 5:30 p.m. and will typically last about a couple of hours.

In the past the classes have been held on Tuesday and Thursday, but the exact days of the week have yet to be decided on for this year.

The class is being put on by the Alabama Rural Water Association and will serve as an operator certification test prep for grades I and II.

According to Jackson, in order to have the ability cut off someone’s water, ADEM requires that a person must be certified as grade I.

The class is open to anyone from around the state and the surrounding counties. Jackson signed up locals Matthew Langston, Daniel Avery and Thorsby mayor Robert Hight to take part in the classes.

In other news from the meeting, the Council:

• Approved Joe Hubbard to the planning commission board.
• Confirmed that this year’s Fourth of July celebration will be on June 28 and begin at 7 p.m. It will be held at Richard Wood Park and will include a fireworks show.
• Approved to observe the statewide Back to School tax holiday July 21-23.
• The mayor informed the Council that he will be out of town and not be able to attend the meeting on June 5. The meeting will remain as scheduled.
• Approved the minutes from the previous meeting on May 1.
• Approved the bills and transferred the funds.
• Approved the minutes from the planning commission meetings on April 5 and May 9.
