Maplesville wins Red Devil softball battle

A battle of Red Devils went the way of the visiting team on Monday afternoon, as the Maplesville knocked off Verbena 13-3.
Both teams put points on the board in the first inning, as Maplesville took an early lead when Meghan Weaver was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, but Verbena answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning on a inside the park home run by Janiya White.
A one-out single by Karley Smitherman and a pair of errors by Verbena on groundballs hit by Emily and Josey Smitherman set up a base-clearing three-RBI double by Katie Payton.
With Verbena unable to answer in the home half of the second, Maplesville maintained a 4-1 lead.
A leadoff ground ball by Weaver to start the third resulted in the Maplesville lead growing by one when Weaver crossed home plate on a throw down to the shortstop on a steal attempt at second.
Verbena answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Jenae Pierce that scored Katelyn Green to make the score 5-2 after three innings of play.
The top of the fourth inning would be the undoing for Verbena, as five runs for Maplesville put the home standing Red Devils in a deep hole.
A one-out walk to Payton along with Emily McGee reaching after being hit by a pitch, set up an RBI single by Allison Jones.
A walk to Weaver loaded the bases and an error by Verbena from a groundball by Gracie Harrison allowed two Maplesville runners to cross the plate.
An RBI single by Karley Smitherman scored Weaver and an RBI single from Emily Smitherman scored Harrison to give Maplesville a 10-2 lead.
A three-up-and-three-down inning for Verbena sent the game to the top of the fifth with Maplesville holding an eight-run lead.
With Maplesville going down in order through the top of the fifth, Verbena cut the Maplesville lead to seven with an RBI double by Candice Williams.
With a seven-run lead in the top of the sixth, Maplesville reached the 10 run mercy rule on a three-RBI inside the park home run by Emily Smitherman and Verbena was unable to answer in the home half of the inning.
Payton led Maplesville at the plate with a two-for-two performance with a single, double, three RBIs and two runs scored.
Kaylee Wright handled the pitching for visiting Maplesville and pitched six innings allowing three earned runs on five hits, with two walks and two strikeouts.
Williams went two-for-three to lead Verbena at the plate with a single, double and one RBI.
She would also got the start on the mound for Verbena and allowed three earned runs on five hits, with a walk and a strikeout.
