Weather in Chilton County may actually begin to look like winter this weekend.

The National Weather Service is watching data and predicting the possibility of winter weather precipitation.

“Our confidence is increasing that there will be some kind of winter precip,” meteorologist Tara Goggins said.

Goggins said there is still a lot of uncertainty on just what type of precipitation the county could see.

She said the precipitation will most likely be snow or sleet, but freezing rain has not been ruled out. The system is projected to roll in Friday night with the precipitation lasting from 6 p.m. into early Saturday morning.

“Winter weather forecasting in the South has always been difficult,” Goggins said.

The difficulty comes, she said, because precipitation usually becomes a wintry mix rather than just snow or sleet.

NWS is updating information as it becomes available and hoped to have more certainty to the forecast by Thursday.

“We might not see snow a lot around here, but it does happen,” Goggins said.

She encouraged those in Chilton County to stay up to date on the forecast and prepare accordingly.

Clanton Mayor Billy Joe Driver said all of the city’s emergency vehicles have tire chains that can be used in the event of a winter storm. Employees are also on standby to place sand on the bridges if winter precipitation begins.

Driver said it was “very seldom” that snow or ice accumulated in Chilton County.
