The Thorsby Rebels varsity boy’s basketball team opened their season in the Indian Springs Tip-off Tournament on Nov. 18 and 19.
The young Rebels lost in a close game to Holy Spirit 52-47 on Nov. 18 but bounced back with a 75-63 win over Victory Christian on Nov. 19.
The Rebels were led on offense against Holy Spirit by sophomore Christian Fortner with 17 points, six rebounds and six blocked shots.
Junior Cain Niece added nine points, while seniors Noah Byrd pitched in with eight and Bailey Sellers had 7 points and 9 rebounds.
The game against Victory Christian had a much better outcome for the Rebels, as they won their first game of the season.
Leaders against Victory Christian were Fortner with 26 points, 11 rebounds, eight steals and seven blocked shots.
Sellers also had a big game with 16 points and 9 rebounds, while Byrd put up 11 points and Chase Merrell added seven points and four rebounds.
“We only have three coming back from last year’s varsity team. For a young, inexperienced team, it was important for them to gain this experience,” Thorsby head coach Tim Fortner said. “They are learning how to play together as a team and are gaining valuable experience on the varsity level. I feel this will help them as we begin our regular season.”
