Thorsby High School held an open house Monday, Aug. 8 for all of its classes, K-12. Principal Russ Bryan welcomed parents and students and went over changes for the upcoming year.

A big change for students and teachers is the new schedule for 7th grade through 12th grade. Students will go to a set of four 80-minute classes on Monday and Wednesday and a different set on Tuesday and Thursday. Every week they will alternate the Friday set of classes.

Bryan said that many of the teachers would need some time to adjust to the new schedule. When asked about the new class schedule, Thorsby student Noah Littlejohn said, “I don’t know what to think about it.”

Bryan mentioned a few more things parents should be aware of this year. A photo ID is necessary to visit the school, and visitors must wear a badge given to them in the front office.

“We are going green and putting a lot more information online,” said Bryan. Parents can find announcements, a school calendar, and sign their child up for the lunch program on the school website, according to Bryan.

The new year brings new possibilities for students. As part of the Chilton County Board of Education’s plan for a unified school district, students can take classes at other schools. According to Bryan, Some will even take their core classes at the LeCroy Career Technical Center while focusing on their trade as part of the new Trade School Academy.

“If your child goes to Thorsby, he or she will have the opportunity to take any courses that any school in the county can take,” said Bryan.
