Man changing tire on I-65 struck, killed

A man changing a tire on Interstate 65 was struck by a vehicle and killed early Saturday morning.

Douglas Leo Cootes, 62, of Wetumpka was pronounced dead on the scene, according to a release from Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

Cootes was changing a tire at 4:20 a.m. Saturday near the 214 mile marker, about two miles north of Clanton, when he was struck by a 2014 Dodge Charger traveling northbound.

The driver of the Charger was injured and transported to a local hospital, according to the release.

No further information was available. Cpl. Jess Thornton with ALEA said more information, including Cootes’ proximity to the roadway and any other factors contributing to the wreck, could be released once the crash report becomes available.

Alabama State Troopers are investigating the incident.
