Jeff State holds Preview Day for prospective students

For many high school seniors, the decision of which college to attend can be a difficult one.
Jefferson State Community College Chilton-Clanton Campus held the first Preview Day from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Friday for high school seniors to have the opportunity to see what the college has to offer.
“Preview Day allows students to come and learn more about our school,” Clanton campus associate dean Ashley Kitchens said. “This is a day like many universities have where we lead group discussions and breakout sessions.”
About 89 students from 15 schools in Alabama attended the Preview Day including students from Jemison, Chilton County High School, Thorsby and Maplesville.
Three “breakout” sessions allowed students to learn more about transfer/general education academy tracts, nursing tracts, and financial aid/paperwork information.
Rodney Thompson, who works with recruitment at the school, talked to the group of students Friday morning about applying to the school.
When Thompson asked how many in the room had already applied to the school, a large group of students raised their hands.
“Most people don’t realize that the only thing you need to be accepted to Jefferson State is a diploma,” Thompson said. “The applications are free and you can complete them online.”
Thompson told the students that core classes were offered at the school, which would allow them to transfer to various colleges in Alabama.
“Any major you can think of, we have classes to offer,” Thompson said.
Students were also shown a video of the Jefferson State Community College Speech Team encouraging future students to find their place at Jefferson State, and had the opportunity to have an “ice breaker” session to meet other students attending Preview Day.
“We are very pleased with the turnout today,” Kitchens said.
Although applications for the school are accepted until the first day of classes, Kitchens said students are encouraged to apply early if seeking financial aid.
“With financial aid, the earlier they apply, the better,” Kitchens said.
Preview Days will also be held at the St. Clair-Pell City Campus on March 18 and the Shelby-Hoover Campus on March 25.
